More About Gifted Assessments

At Mills Gosse Psychology, we offer comprehensive gifted assessments for both children and adults. These assessments help identify intellectual strengths, provide a deeper understanding of cognitive abilities, and offer valuable insights to support educational, personal, and professional growth.

For children, a gifted assessment can also help determine whether they may be eligible for gifted programming at school.

Our gifted assessment includes administration of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale, a widely recognized and well-validated measure of cognitive ability. For children, we currently administer the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition (WISC-V), which is widely accepted by local school boards as part of the gifted identification process.

This specialized assessment focuses specifically on intellectual functioning. Following the assessment, clients (or parents/guardians, in the case of children) receive a summary of results and cognitive ability scores. For children, these results can be submitted to the school board for consideration as part of the gifted program eligibility process. Please note that each school board establishes its own criteria for gifted identification and determines eligibility independently.

Is a Gifted Assessment Right for You or Your Child?

A gifted assessment evaluates cognitive ability only. It does not assess academic achievement, learning disabilities, attention difficulties, behavioural concerns, mental health concerns, or other factors that may affect learning and functioning.

If you have concerns about learning, academic performance, attention, behaviour, emotional well-being, or overall functioning, a psychoeducational assessment may be a more appropriate option. A psychoeducational assessment provides a more comprehensive evaluation of an individual's cognitive, academic, behavioural, and emotional strengths and challenges.

Our Process

Appointments:

  • Testing appointments are held in person at our head office in Ajax, Ontario.

  • The gifted assessment is scheduled for 2 hours.

  • Appointments are conducted Monday through Friday during regular business hours.

  • An approximately 20-minute telephone feedback session will follow to review the testing results.

Fee & Payment:

  • The fee for this service is $750.

  • To reserve your assessment, a retainer of $225 is required.

  • We accept payment by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or e-transfer.

  • We kindly ask that a valid credit card be provided to keep securely on file.

Insurance:

  • Some insurance plans may cover this service; however, we recommend you check your coverage with your insurance provider. We are happy to provide you with an estimate upon request, once we confirm we can proceed with the assessment.

  • Receipts will be issued in the Supervising Psychologist’s name and registration number after each payment is made, and will also include the psychometrist’s name and credentials, if applicable.

Report:

  • The gifted assessment service solely provides intelligence scores and does not encompass the evaluation of any other learning or behavioural issues.

  • The final report will be prepared and emailed typically within 3-5 business days after the appointment.

Kindly Note:

  • Please avoid any attempt to prepare or study for intelligence tests, as such efforts can undermine the accuracy of your cognitive profile. In some cases, we may not be able to provide scores if we believe the results are compromised by prior preparation. There is no valid way to “study” for gifted testing because it measures aptitude, not learned knowledge. Be wary of services that claim to offer test preparation; these are generally unreliable. The most effective approach is simply to arrive well-rested, calm, and ready to do your best. Please remember that the results do not reflect your overall worth as a person.

  • Psychological assessment services may be conducted by qualified assessors under supervision, and may not be performed by a psychologist directly. While this is a very common and widely accepted practice, some insurance plans do not cover such services. Therefore, you must inquire with your insurance provider to determine coverage.
